Get To Know: Welsh fashion photographer Osian-Wyn

Growing up in Barry, Wales, Osian-Wyn was the only person in his peer group doing fashion photography. But, instead of seeing this as a disadvantage, the young creative believes his drive and tenacity can be attributed to this early isolation, because Osian-Wyn had to teach himself everything from an early age. It also gave him an appreciation for shooting normal people (not just models and musicians) – a preference that shapes his work to this day. 

Now based in London, Osian-Wyn's work is guided by a fascination with people, culture and the stories contained within that. At just 20 his portfolio spans an impressive range – from shooting red carpets at the BAFTAs to campaigns with New Balance and Clash Magazine, and capturing the musician Tems.

How would you describe yourself and your work?

I’m guided by a fascination for people, culture and the stories people embody. I use photography as a way to capture moments and outfits that feel genuine and personal. My images are driven by an interest in character and identity. I focus on the small gestures, expressions, and details that reveal something beyond the surface.

How have you got to where you are today?

I just love the game. I didn’t start photography to make money or as a business. I just love capturing, I love the pre production, production and post, I also enjoy  talking about the ideas before being executed. 

What is the mission / intention of your work?

My mission is to show people as their authentic self and break the norms of the industry. I also try to bring Wales into as many projects as I can and show it’s not all sheep and fields. 

What project are you most proud of and why? 

I’m proud of every project but was very happy when I shot for Charles Jeffrey LoverBoy as I got a message from my mum in Welsh “ti yn Paris a wedi cal gwaith yn Paris fashion week- dyna Beth odd breuddwyd ti unwaith”. Which means “you're in Paris, working at Paris fashion week- that was your dream once." It just showed that the work is paying off. 

Who or what is inspiring you right now?

My brother inspires me everyday, he’s neurodivergent and the way he sees the world is amazing. If a shoot goes bad or I don’t overly love the photo he can see the good in the photo. Wish I could think like that 24/7. Also people in general inspire me: the postman, bus driver, boss man.

What's your favourite type of photography to conduct? Or your favourite shoots to work on?

I love shooting people off guard, or when they’re not posed and love working on shoots when people are relaxed and fun.

What's something about your industry that you think is due a re-think?

I think people need to start helping each other out and not be worried that they’ll rob your connection. There’s enough work out here for everyone to eat.
